HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – Poseidon Water has launched an educational radio advertising campaign to raise public awareness about its plans to create a local, drought-proof drinking water supply through ocean desalination. The radio spots are running on Costa Mesa-based KOCI, broadcasting on 101.5 FM or on the Internet at www.kociradio.com. The campaign will initially feature two separate thirty-second spots that air throughout the day for seventeen weeks. Additional spots will be created and rotated during the campaign. Poseidon is in the final phase of permitting a 50 million gallon per day desalination plant in Huntington Beach, which will provide a new local drinking water supply to complement water recycling and conservation efforts.
About half of Orange County’s water supply is imported from the Colorado River or the Sacramento San Joaquin Bay Delta. Both water supply sources are increasingly limited due to drought conditions and environmental regulations. The Poseidon plant would produce enough drinking water for 300,000 people a day or about 8% of the County’s water supply, and enhance water supply reliability by reducing demand on constrained imported supplies.
The Huntington Beach project is in the final phase of permitting, with a Coastal Development Permit the last approval required for construction. The California Coastal Commission hearing is anticipated to take place in October.
Poseidon is working with the Orange County Water District, Municipal Water District of Orange County and retail water agencies throughout the county on a public-private partnership to finance, construct and operate the Huntington Beach project. Construction on a similar Poseidon facility is already underway in Carlsbad.
Poseidon Water specializes in developing and financing water infrastructure projects, primarily seawater desalination and water treatment plants. These projects are implemented through innovative public-private partnerships in which private enterprise assumes the developmental and financial risks.
