Poseidon Proposes Enhanced Coastal Habitat Restoration Plan and Accelerated Bolsa Chica Wetlands Financial Obligation

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (February 12, 2021) - The Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board (“Regional Board”) today released a revised Tentative Order permitting the operation of the proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Project (“Project”). The Regional Board is tentatively planning to consider adoption of the permit this coming April.
The Regional Board held three public hearings in July and August 2020 to consider the staff- recommended amendment and renewal of the Project’s permit, which was first adopted in 2006. The Regional Board requested at the time that Poseidon and its staff work together to amend plans to mitigate the Project’s unavoidable marine life effects.

​Three years ago Poseidon Water built and constructed the largest seawater desalination plant
in the western hemisphere in Carlsbad. Poseidon is in the final permitting stages of a second
seawater desalination plant in Orange County.

Poseidon will be hosting a tour of the Carlsbad Desalination Plant on December 2, 2019 at
10:00 a.m. Please RSVP if you would like to attend. Please plan on wearing long pants and
closed-toed shoes. You must also have a state-issued ID, such as a California Driver’s License. Hard hats and vests will be provided at the site. Please respond at info@hbfreshwater.com or call 949-294-8269 with your full name.

Here is the chronological list of lawsuits that have been filed against the Huntington Beach Seawater Desalination Project. Between 2006 and 2018, six legal challenges – two lawsuits and four administrative permit appeals – were filed against the Huntington Beach desalination project by opponents of seawater desalination.

Orange County Water District Approves Water Purchase Agreement Term Sheet with Poseidon Water

Tonight the Orange County Water District (“OCWD”) Board of Directors voted to approve an amendment to the 2015 water purchase agreement term sheet with Poseidon Water for the purchase of 56,000-acre feet per year of drinking water from the proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Project (“Project”). “This is a great step forward for the ratepayers,” said Orange County Taxpayers Association President and CEO Carolyn Cavecche.  “The new agreement further shifts financial risk and responsibility to the private sector, protecting ratepayers and keeping Orange County on track for water independence.”
